In today’s world, the trustworthy mom and pop trade businesses are becoming extremely scarce. Everywhere you turn, it seems that everyone is focusing on sales based business practices, artificial intelligence, and private equity funding and ownership. Having your heating and air conditioning system repaired or replaced for fair pricing and by honest people is starting to become a rare thing.
Many local HVAC companies (and plumbing and electrical) are being acquired by private equity firms that gain majority ownership of the companies but allow the companies to keep the original business name and owner in place. Once the private equity has majority ownership, they have majority control. They implement processes and procedures that are instilled into the employees with the promise of, “follow the process and you will make great money for yourself.” The sad and unfortunate truth of this is that these “processes” are designed to push homeowners to purchase new systems based off of the company labeling their overpriced repairs as a “poor investment for the age of the system”. The primary focus of these companies is getting “turnovers/flips” (booking appointments with a sales person). This is accomplished by offering free services to get the company in the home. Once in the home and performing an overview of the system, they are trained to speak about existing preventative repairs but also things that “could go wrong” with the system in the future. These potential issues are used to influence speaking with a sales person. One of the most unfortunate realities of this business model is that most of the technicians that work for these companies are not very well versed on performing repairs or the understanding of heating and air conditioning in general. When it comes down to it, they are essentially salespeople with a tool bag. For your information, a few things that indicate a potential private equity backed company is severely high pricing, process based or “scripted” presentations, and corporate style marketing.
It is my mission and focus to bring the traditional and trustworthy “friendly neighborhood HVAC guy” feeling back to the industry and to Eastern North Carolina. I believe in providing fair pricing, honest evaluation of systems, and educating customers so that they may make the best informed decisions. I believe in simple, honest, HVAC. I do not agree with the vision of private equity and am frankly bothered by the change it is bringing to the industry that I love.
If you are in search of a local and trustworthy company that can provide high quality, honest, and fair service, maintenance, and installation of HVAC systems, Mooring Mechanical would love to serve you. At Mooring Mechanical, you aren’t a “client” or a number on a spreadsheet. You are a neighbor, someone we care about.
